Why is Harbour Island the Most Cherished Destination in The Bahamas?

Known as “Briland” by its residents and treasured as a peaceful and tranquil place, Harbour Island is considered to be the crown jewel of The Bahamas. Harbour Island is only three miles long with a protected harbor to the west and a famous Pink Sand Beach to the east.

Once the capitol of The Bahamas, Harbour Island’s culture was influenced by loyalist settlers in the 1700s. Charming pastel-colored New England style cottages line the narrow streets and are a lasting reminder of times gone by.

In just one visit, it’s easy to understand why Conde Nast Traveler’s list of the world's top 10 beaches includes Harbour Island's famed 'Pink Sand Beach'. It was also ranked "The Best Island in the Caribbean" by Travel & Leisure magazine, more than once. With its combination of cerulean waters, stretches of magical pink sand beaches and lush, green tropical landscape, the destination is an authentic island dreamscape.

Harbour Island offers a variety of family-friendly watersport activities including snorkeling, diving, fishing, and blue holes. Giant coral reefs such as Sea Gardens, a horseshoe shaped reef with an abundance of coral and exotic creatures, are accessible by swimming from the beach. Shipwrecks, like the Potato & Onion Wreck, a spectacular 200 ft long ship that sunk in 1895, offers scuba divers thrilling opportunities. A Blue Hole, an underwater cave, allows scuba divers and snorkelers fascinating underwater exploration.

Considered the “Sportfishing Center of the Bahamas,” Harbour Island hosts the most prestigious finishing tournaments, such as the Bahama Billfish Championship. Some of the most thrilling fishing experiences of a lifetime surround Harbour island, including Dutch Bar, Wide Opening, Shallow Ground, and the Pinnacle. James Point, a popular place to catch marlin, is where a ledge plunges over 1,000 feet into deep, clear, blue water. The island is one of only a few to offer fine dining as well as offering the experience of fresh fish served by locals, Bahamian style.

To get to Harbour Island, take a boat, or fly to North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) from Nassau, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Atlanta, or Charlotte. From there, a five minute water taxi takes you to Harbour Island. You will feel the friendliness of locals the moment you arrive, creating a feeling of warmth and friendship that will last for generations.
